'SpongeBob' took fourth place with $16 million from 3,557 locations. This PG-rated film, based on the beloved Nickelodeon show, had a production budget of $64 million. Initial ticket sales are the lowest of the three 'SpongeBob' theatrical releases, with the first film opening to $32 million in 2004 and the second film, released in 2015, opening to $55 million. On the other hand, Disney's political dramedy 'Ella McCay' suffered a catastrophic drop, earning just $480,000 from 2,500 theaters in its second weekend. With a production budget of $35 million, 'Ella McCay' has only grossed a meager $3.5 million so far.
In limited release, A24's ping-pong dramedy 'Marty Supreme' made a splash, breaking into the top 10 with a remarkable $875,000 from just six screens. This translates to an impressive $145,933 per theater, the best of the year and the highest average since 'La La Land' in 2016, according to A24. The film's nationwide expansion on Christmas Day is expected to be a success, thanks in part to Timothee Chalamet's stellar press tour. Directed by Josh Safdie ('Uncut Gems'), 'Marty Supreme' follows the fictional table-tennis champion Marty Mauser's pursuit of greatness, with a budget of approximately $70 million.
