WBC Sanctions Martinez vs Aleem for Interim Super Middleweight Title (2026)

Lester Martinez-Immanuwel Aleem interim title fight sanctioned by WBC: A New Chapter for Guatemala's Rising Star

The WBC has sanctioned a highly anticipated interim super middleweight title fight between Lester Martinez and Immanuwel Aleem, marking a significant moment in boxing history for Guatemala.

But here's where it gets controversial... The fight, set for March 21 in San Bernardino, California, is a chance for Martinez, a 30-year-old from Guatemala, to become the country's first-ever world champion. While many are excited for this opportunity, some question whether the WBC's decision to elevate Martinez to the interim title is fair, given his recent draw against Christian Mbilli.

'As president of the WBC, I am thrilled to know such an amazing young man as Lester,' said Mauricio Sulaiman, but the question remains: is this a well-deserved opportunity or a rushed decision?

Martinez, who has an impressive 19-0-1 record with 16 knockouts, has been on a roll since his entertaining draw against Mbilli in September. The fight, which took place on the Terence Crawford-Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez card in Las Vegas, earned him the Fight of the Year trophy. But some argue that the WBC's decision to elevate him to the interim title is premature, given the recent retirement of Crawford and the subsequent title vacancies.

'I really thought I won the fight on September 13, and it’s been frustrating to not get a rematch with Mbilli,' Martinez said. 'I very much appreciate Mauricio and the WBC Board of Governors for giving me this opportunity. It’s been my dream to be the first Guatemalan champion ever. I can’t wait for March 21.'

The fight will take place at the Orange Show Events Center, where Martinez knocked out Joeshon James in the fourth round in March. With the approval to fight for the WBC interim belt, Martinez is determined to make his mark and prove his worth.

'We’re at that level, and I know my next fight will be for a world title,' he said. 'I want to beat a truly great boxer and I want to be a world champion. Of course, I’m interested in both.'

But here's the twist... The WBC has elevated Canada's Mbilli, previously its interim belt holder, to full titlist, and the intention is to make his first title defense against four-division champion Alvarez in September. This has sparked further debate, as some question whether Alvarez, who underwent left elbow surgery in October, is ready for such a high-stakes fight.

'I’d like to thank the WBC for granting Lester this opportunity,' said Garry Jonas, Martinez's promoter. 'I know it’s not easy doing their job with all the twists and turns that can take place at this level of the sport. This is a fair and reasonable outcome that Lester gets a chance to fight for the same belt he competed with Mbilli for. This is a big deal for Lester and his country.'

So, what do you think? Is the WBC's decision to sanction this fight a fair one, or is it a rushed decision that could impact the sport's integrity? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
